mainly bc the series goes back and forth wrt how much they emphasize it—daniel is basically the beating heart of like, the stargate itself, everything to do with the stargate. he spends years as an academic laughingstock for his outrageous theories and claims about ancient egypt; is able to figure out translations about the stargate left behind in a matter of two weeks versus the two years the previous translators had put in (+ all the decades of research prior); is the one who essentially names the device (to the point that when he’s first shown it, the woman funding the project goes ā€œit’s your ā€˜stargateā€™ā€). he’s the one who adapts to traveling through the gate so well he immediately stays behind on an alien planet; when they have to recall him a year later, he’s upheld as THEE living expert for the stargate on earth. it carries on even to like, the aliens who built the stargate—daniel figures out who they were; daniel figures out how to speak and read their language; daniel bonds with surviving members of their species, and when he dies even basically goes for their form of an afterlife (ascending to a higher plane of existence). it’s daniel tho so the death doesn’t stick, but anyway. guy might as well have a stargate tattooed on his ass like he is the linchpin of every single thing anything in the entire series has to do with the stargate.

ironically, i don’t think he’s genetically linked to the aliens who built the stargate, even though the series establishes a random chance of any human being to have the gene and the main military protagonists of both sg-1 and atlantis do have the gene.
