on an episode/arc i’ve been DREADING because even though it’s been twenty years,

i remembered how boring i found this particular plot point—where the woman (sam) from the main team is kidnapped by a humanoid version of a popular villain (the replicators, who were originally spider-looking mechanical creatures that were deeply creepy, spat acid, and propagated in huge numbers. having kidnapped sam, they also make their own humanoid replicator duplicate of her, that would go on to pop up from time to time.)

having reached this arc at last, i see my original criticisms remain valid, but also why it probably stands out as so egregious.

my main complaint with how boring this is is that the human replicators themselves are an immense downgrade—generic antagonists played by actors, instead of mechanized creepy-crawlies (with the world’s most distinctive metallic scuttling sound effect.) they also copied a member of the team where having an evil clone is by and far the least interesting, compared to the others (and carries the most potential for weird pervy undertones.)

so a boring downgrade to a great villain, and the worst possible pick for an evil clone. BUT THEN, rewatching, it’s like…

plot A has daniel and the leader of the stargate program negotiating a series of crazy bluffs with a tenuous alliance of the main recurring villains of the series. the earth itself and about 26 other planets rely on whatever these two groups that absolutely hate each other decide.

plot B has another team member and one of the most popular allies in fandom (from a race of little grey men šŸ‘½) fighting off the actual original replicators. the homeworld of their allies, the potential for an unstoppable fleet of more human replicators, and jack’s fate all hang in the balance.

so plot C with sam getting kidnapped by the replicator downgrade so it’s just her and Generic Villain Introduced Last Season speaking to each other is just 😓 to add insult to injury, there’s absolutely nothing at stake other than sam herself (which, sorry, someone’s endangered every week, so big deal),

like you’re taking me away from the actual replicators, a beloved supporting character, and a hilariously batshit series of bluffs with the main antagonists of the series to just watch some talking heads with the replicator downgrade? 😭😭😭

but it is funny it’s been literally two decades since i watched these episodes and my memory was like ā€œGawd, Replicator!Sam Was Excruciatingly Dull.ā€
